Our
History
The firm was established by Mr JS Smit in 1935. Mr Smit was South Africa’s High Commissioner in London from 1925 – 1929. He was also South Africa’s representative at the inception of the League of Nations, which developed into the United Nations as we know it today. Mr Smit also represented South Africa at the Geneve convention. After returning to South Africa, he was appointed as the Administrator of the Transvaal Province. He served as such from 1929 – 1934.
After a successful and illustrious political career, he moved to Piet Retief to practice law. Mr Smit had various partners at the firm, for short periods, over the years. In 1945 Mr PP Vorster joined Mr Smit as partner of the firm.
When Mr Smit Passed away in 1960, Mr PP Vorster took over the firm on his own. As with Mr Smit, Mr Vorster had various partners at the firm, but also for short periods. Oom Paul, as he became fondly known as, practiced law in Piet Retief well into his ninety’s and was a well known and well loved man throughout all the communities in Piet Retief.
In 1987 Mr C Robbertse joined Mr Vorster as partner at the firm. Mr Robbertse had worked as State Prosecutor after his studies and also practised law in Pretoria, before making his way to Piet Retief. Growing up in Vryheid, Kwa Zulu Natal, Mr Robbertse’s grasp of the Zulu Language enabled the firm to further expand their client base. Mr Robbertse quickly became a well known and respected Lawyer, by all he met.
In 2002, Mr CJ Coetzee joined Mr Robbertse as partner at the firm. Mr Robbertse and Mr Coetzee practiced as partners, with Mr PP Vorster and Mrs J Krynauw as assistants. In 2003, the partnership was converted into a company, Vorster, Robbertse & Coetzee Inc.
Since 1935, this firm has served the community of Piet Retief, to the highest degree of honour and integrity. To this day, these two values are the core of our business.
With like minded clients, the firm has evolved into an almost Boutique Law Firm that strives to continue the legacy of those before us.
